CD Review
- John Nemerovski, MyMac Magazine

These lessons are one-on-one sessions in real time via Zoom. If you are new to finger picking or, already comfortable with the alternating-thumb style, also called "Cotton" or "Travis" picking, I can help you get started and help you advance, adding more variety and technique to your playing. It's the foundation of my own playing and I add many other influences to it, including Blues, Mountain Frailing, Flat-picking, Bluegrass, and even a bit of Celtic Fiddle flavorings.
Alternating-thumb finger style is the foundation to the playing of Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Tommy Emannuel, Mississippi John Hurt and so many great players.

I've studied this style, up, down and sideways through decades of playing and performing, leading my own band in the San Francisco Blues scene, and then touring as a solo singer/songwriter. I've led workshops at festivals, competed nationally & internationally, and developed a body of knowledge and techniques. (see more details below)

The best first step is to contact me for a free consultation. Let's have a discussion about what you'd like to learn and what I can do to help advance your playing.

SOME SPECIFIC AREAS COVERED:

SEPARATING THE THUMB FROM WHAT THE FINGERS ARE DOING
This can be very frustrating when you are starting out with alternate
thumb finger picking. I have a technique that
can help you get through this.

COMBINING ALTERNATE THUMB AND BLUES STYLE FINGER PICKING
The basics are different, but they each lend themselves well
to being combined.

PLAYING SLIDE IN STANDARD TUNING

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PRACTICE

WHAT IS BLUES AND WHY
This is one of my workshops, but is well worth including here to offer
a deeper pragmatic understanding of what is Blues.

PICKS ? THUMB & FINGER ? ARTIFICIAL NAILS ? BARE FINGERS ?
Pros and cons. I've tried 'em all and can share some insights that
will give you the ins and outs, advantages and disadvantages,
of each. There is no one right way.

FINE TUNING YOUR TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER TONE AND CLARITY
As you progress as a player, this becomes more and more important

PRACTICAL MUSIC THEORY
I include music theory when it's helpful to your understanding, but
won't over burden you with it. I like to keep things fun.
After all, it's called playing music!
